State and transition models for Mallee Woodlands of the Murray Darling Depression of south-east Australia

This report presents a regional State-and-Transition Model (STM) for mallee ecosystems of the Murray Darling Depression across South Australia, Victoria and south-western New South Wales. The model was developed to support ecological interpretation, conservation planning, restoration, monitoring and future spatial simulation of vegetation-condition change under drivers such as fire, grazing, drought, invasive species and management intervention. It provides a common framework for three major mallee vegetation archetypes: Mesic Heathy Mallee, Shrubby/Triodia Mallee and Tussock Grass/Chenopod Mallee.The work was designed as a decision-support product for use in regional conservation planning, management mapping, scenario forecasting and monitoring. It also contributes ecological knowledge relevant to the Australian Government’s Ecological Knowledge System and Nature Repair Market by providing a transparent framework for linking ecosystem condition, management actions and expected biodiversity outcomes.Human research ethics approval was obtained from La Trobe University under approval number HEC24480. All workshop participants were provided with project information, gave informed consent and were briefed on the intended use of their contributions before participating. The report should be interpreted as an expert-derived conceptual model rather than a fully validated predictive model. Future applications should document any local adaptation, parameterisation, spatial implementation, uncertainty analysis or validation undertaken for a particular landscape or management context.This report contains expert-elicited ecological knowledge and regional management information. It should not be interpreted as representing Indigenous cultural knowledge or authority. Appropriate permissions and local consultation should be sought before applying the material to culturally sensitive places, species or management activities.
