Nefeli Avgerou (IKIFP) presented her poster "Crizzling of Historical Glass" at the Gordon Research Seminar Rethinking Established and Emerging Analytical Techniques for Conservation, Art History and Archaeology. The crizzling of historical glasses is the process of irreversible microcrack formation on the surface of the so-called hydrated layers formed on their surfaces, when exposed to high RH environments. From our research on Medieval European replica glasses, it was shown that whether the crizzling occurs is related to the rate of the RH change from high to low. Preliminary experiments with the nanoindentation technique proved that the mechanical properties of the hydrated layers are time dependent. Last but not least, it was shown that the acoustic emission technique is suitable for monitoring salt crystallization processes on the surface of these glasses.
