Gvozdova, not Hvozdiv. Uncovering the Moldovan origin of one frequently cited Mesolithic flint collection

This article focuses on a collection of lithic artefacts first described by V. Danylenko in his 1969 monograph as material found at the Hvozdiv site on the Southern Buh River (Vinnytsia Region, Ukraine) in 1956. Subsequently, researchers frequently cited this site as being associated with the Kukrek culture. However, recent field investigations, discrepancies between published and archival data, and inconsistent inscriptions on the artefacts cast doubt on the published origin of the collection. An alternative hypothesis was proposed and tested by identifying locations meeting specific criteria designed to resolve these contradictions. As a result, the collection’s origin was linked to the Mesolithic sites investigated in 1956 near the village of Gvozdova (Florești District, Moldova) in the Răut River basin. Archival materials indirectly confirm that V. Danylenko brought the collection from Chișinău to Kyiv in May 1964. By extension, this study highlights the necessity of critically examining even long-standing academic assertions that may prove erroneous.
