Acta Acustica: Achievements 2025 and State of Art

2025 has been a very exciting year for Acta Acustica.After its foundation by the European Acoustics Association (EAA) in 1993, the European journal has gone through major evolutions and since 2020, it has turned into a full Open Access (OA) journal in 2020 under the name Acta Acustica.With the support of its publisher, EDP Sciences, the journal has taken a further step forward: since January 1st 2025, Acta Acustica operates under a Diamond Open Access model.This means that the journal is freely accessible to readers worldwide and free to publish.Unlike Gold Open Access, the financial constraint of Article Processing Charges (APCs) doesn't fall on authors.This transition represented far more than an administrative change; it required a complete redesign of the journal's financial model.While readers and authors do not pay to access or publish research under this model, maintaining a high-quality scientific journal still requires significant resources.Editorial management, peer-review coordination, digital publishing infrastructure, long-term archiving, and dissemination activities all depend on sustained institutional support.In the Diamond Open Access framework, these costs are collectively supported by research organisations, libraries, and scientific societies committed to advancing open science.By adopting this model, the EAA and the editorial board sought to significantly broaden the scientific reach of Acta Acustica and encourage contributions from a wider and more diverse community.Removing financial barriers for both readers and authors allows the journal to foster a more equitable academic landscape and facilitate the circulation of ideas across the global acoustics community, including researchers and institutions with more limited resources.First and foremost, the editorial board would like to thank the partners of the collaborative funding model who came together and decided to support a fairer and open science.Especially, the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB), the French Society of Acoustics (SFA) and the EAA have provided the financial basis for the journal's transition to Diamond OA over an initial three-year period 2025-2027 (for details see here).This initiative takes place in a larger context : in Europe the support for Diamond Open Access journals has flourished in the past years and cristallized into a financial and political effort endorsed by the European University Association (EUA), cOAlition S, Science Europe as well as CNRS and TIB, both direct supporters of Acta Acustica.The development of Diamond Open Access journals is increasingly recognised as a strategic component of a sustainable and community-driven scholarly publishing ecosystem in Europe.Initiatives such as the Diamond Open Access Action Plan aim to strengthen non-commercial publishing infrastructures and to support equitable access to scientific knowledge across disciplines and regions.In 2022, an Action Plan for Diamond Open Access was published by Science Europe, a consortium of major research bodies working towards a more efficient research landscape and better 1
