Methane Emissions in Melbourne, Australia: Prior Estimates using Global and National Data

This collection contains the datasets developed and used in: Shahrokhi et al. (2026a), Methane Emissions in Melbourne, Australia; Part 1: Prior Estimates Using Global and National Data. Shahrokhi et al. (2026b), Methane Emissions in Melbourne, Australia; Part 2: Improving Prior Estimates Using Synthesis Inversion. The collection includes the following datasets. Emission Data: "Sectoral Methane Emissions Victoria and Melbourne.nc" contains gridded annual methane emissions for the state of Victoria with greater detail for Melbourne from 19 emission sectors, together with total methane emissions, across the modelling domain. Emissions are provided in units of kt/year on 3 km × 3 km grids. The modelling domain covers the state of Victoria and northern Tasmania, Australia (see the Location Details map). "Agriculture Emissions Australia.nc" contains gridded annual methane emissions from the agricultural sector across Australia. Emissions are provided in units of kg/s on approximately 1 km × 1 km grids. This dataset was derived using the Australian livestock distribution dataset developed by Navarro and Marcos Martinez (2021; subsequently updated by the authors in 2025), together with sector-specific methane emission factors. Further details on the methodology are provided in Shahrokhi et al. (2026a). Grid Information: "GRIDCRO2D_0" and "GRIDDOT2D_0" provide the spatial grid information for the modelling domain, including grid row and column indices, latitude, and longitude coordinates corresponding to the 3 km x 3 km modelling grid. Modelled Data: "Modelled Data – Meteorology and Mole Fractions.csv" contains hourly averaged output from the offline WRF–CMAQ forward model for January–June 2023. The data were extracted for the Melbourne observation sites (Aspendale, Bangholme, Clayton and Parkville) and the regional background site at Kennaook/Cape Grim, Tasmania. The file includes meteorological variables and methane mole fractions attributed to each of the 19 emission sectors presented in the emission files. Wind speed is reported in m/s, wind direction in degrees, planetary boundary layer (PBL) height in metres, and methane mole fractions for each sector in parts per billion (ppb).
