Impact of Climate Change Adaptation on Physical Activity and Psychological Well-Being among Older Adults: A Scoping Review from Africa

Climate change has been identified as one of the greatest global health threats and older people are one of the most vulnerable populations as they experience age-related physiological changes, existing chronic health conditions and a lack of adaptive capacity and a heightened sensitivity to environmental stressors. In Africa, where the number of elderly people is increasing and they are facing greater climate-related risks like extreme heat, flooding, drought and variations in rainfall, climate change adaptation has become critical for the protection of health and well-being. This scoping review aims to map and synthesize existing evidence on the impact of climate change adaptation strategies on physical activity and psychological well-being among older adults in Africa. The review will categorize adaptation strategies by type, explore how they affect physical activity participation and psychological outcomes, discuss factors that may impact their effectiveness, and highlight gaps in the current evidence base for further research, policy development and for designing age-responsive climate adaptation interventions.
