Acute effects of competitive exercise context and competitive outcomes on mood responses

Acute mood responses to exercise are recognised as important determinants of exercise adherence, yet the influence of competitive team-game context on these responses remains underexplored. This study compared acute mood responses between team-game and non- competitive group exercise while controlling for exercise intensity. A randomised crossover design was employed with 69 physical education students (age range = 19–30 years; 27 females). Participants completed two 20-minute sessions: an indoor soccer game (TS) and a video-led group exercise session (GE). Mood was assessed pre- and post-exercise using the Profile of Mood States–Short Form (POMS–SF), and intensity was measured using Borg’s Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE). Data were analysed using linear mixed-effects ANCOVA models. Both conditions produced significant and comparable reductions in Total Mood Disturbance (TMD). However, the TS condition elicited significantly higher adjusted post-session vigor compared to GE (Δ = 2.33, 95% CI [0.78, 3.88]), Benjamini-Hochberg (BH) adjusted p = 0.024, d = 0.52). Within the TS condition, competitive outcome influenced acute mood responses, with winners displaying less Total Mood Disturbance (TMD) (Δ = - 5.81, 95% CI [-11.24, -0.37], p = 0.037, d = 0.40) and Anger (Δ = -2.53, 95% CI [-4.23, - 0.83], adjusted p = 0.024, d = -0.77) compared to losers. These findings suggest that psychosocial factors of team games – such as competition and cooperation – can contribute to enhanced energy beyond the effects of exercise alone. Additionally, the findings imply that even short recreational team games can lead to different mood responses between losers and winners.
