This dataset compiles concentrations of trace metals (Pb, Cd, Ni and Hg) and organic contaminants, including Fluoranthene, 16 EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), DDTs, CB153 and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), measured in transplanted mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) during the MYTILOS (2004–2006), MYTIMED (2007), MYTIAD (2008), MYTIOR (2009) and MYTITURK (2011) campaigns conducted across the Mediterranean Sea. The dataset was assembled within the framework of the MYTILOS program to provide a harmonized Mediterranean-wide baseline of chemical contamination in coastal marine environments. It supports the assessment of spatial patterns of contamination, comparisons among Mediterranean sub-basins, the identification of contamination hotspots, and future evaluations of long-term environmental change. By integrating data from several coordinated monitoring campaigns, the dataset enhances the comparability of biomonitoring observations collected throughout the Mediterranean basin. Contaminant concentrations were determined in caged mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) following the RINBIO transplantation protocol described by Andral et al. (2004). Mussels originating from a common reference site were deployed at coastal stations for a standardized exposure period before collection and chemical analysis. This approach minimizes biological variability and allows direct comparison of contamination levels among sites. The dataset includes concentrations of trace metals expressed as µg g⁻¹ dry mass (dw) and concentrations of organic contaminants expressed as ng g⁻¹ dry mass (dw). Metadata associated with each record provide information on sampling campaigns, deployment sites, geographic coordinates, contaminant groups and analytical measurements. The dataset constitutes a valuable reference for marine biomonitoring studies, environmental assessments, contaminant trend analyses and regional-scale evaluations of chemical contamination in the Mediterranean Sea.
