EuFor database: Consistent and Harmonized Forest Statistics for Forest-Use Intensity Analyses Across Europe (2000–2023)

EuFor Database Important Usage Note This version of the EuFor Database is provided as part of the peer-review process for a data description manuscript currently under review at Earth System Science Data (ESSD) https://www.earth-system-science-data.net/ The database structure, contents, and documentation may be revised based on reviewer feedback and the outcome of the review process. Users are therefore advised to exercise caution when using these data before the review process has been completed and the final publication is available. More detailed information on the database, data sources, harmonization procedures, and methods for uncertainty assessment are provided in the preprint: https://essd.copernicus.org/preprints/essd-2026-540/ Users should ensure that the uncertainty assessments and limitations described in the associated paper are taken into account when interpreting results derived from the database, as they provide important context regarding data quality, comparability, and the robustness of the underlying estimates. Repository Contents EuFor-reported Contains original forest statistics compiled from national sources (National Forest Inventories (NFIs) and forest census statistics) and international sources (State of European Forests (SoEF) v2020 and FAOSTAT), including: Forest area Harvest Growing stock Increment The EuFor-reported database subset covers the period 1990–2024, subject to data availability in the underlying sources. It preserves the original classifications, definitions, and reporting schemes used by the respective sources. Consequently, variables may contain multiple reporting categories and levels of aggregation, including species information and observations reported at different spatial scales (e.g., national and multiple subnational levels). Data are provided both as individual CSV files for each variable and as a combined Excel workbook (.xlsx). EuFor-harmonized Contains harmonized and internally consistent forest statistics derived from the EuFor-reported data through an harmonization workflow, including: Forest area estimates at total forest area [1000 ha] Harvest estimates at roundwood under bark [1000 m³/yr] Growing stock estimates at roundwood under bark [1000 m³] The EuFor-harmonized database subset covers the period 2000–2023 and provides data for a consistent set of 214 national and subnational regions across Europe. All variables have been harmonized to common definitions and completed to annual time series, enabling direct comparisons across countries, regions, and time. Data are provided both as individual CSV files for each variable and as a combined Excel workbook (.xlsx). EuFor-regions Contains the spatial reference layer for the 214 EuFor regions used in the harmonized subset of the database. The vector data are primarily based on the NUTS classification published by: European Union (2022).
