Health Care by Food Data Vault

The American Heart Association’s (Association) Health Care by Food™ (HCXF) initiative aims to create a future where “food is medicine” interventions are used alongside or instead of traditional drug to treat, manage, or prevent diet-related health conditions. The initiative’s unique cross-functional approach is working towards the adoption and sustainability of healthy dietary patterns that are effective in improving health conditions and cost-effective. Through research, public engagement, and advocacy, it seeks to have widespread adoption of these interventions in health care systems and communities. The studies awarded by and associated with the initiative are documented in the HCXF Data Vault. This relational database contains tables in three main areas: study-level, participant-level, and common measures. Study-level data documents design of studies such as the interventions applied, inclusion/exclusion criteria, and outcomes studied. Participant-level tables hold information on the people who enrolled in these studies such as their sociodemographic factors, dietary intake, biomarkers, and intervention adherence. There is also reference information about the common measures which studies were asked to collect. The Association maintains a perpetual, non-exclusive license to use, reproduce, share, and create derivative works from the awarded studies that compose the database. The HCXF Initiative is supported by anchor funding from The Rockefeller Foundation and contributions from inaugural collaborator Kroger, with additional support from Builders Initiative; Elevance Health; Instacart; Kaiser Permanente; Lyda Hill Philanthropies; United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey; and the Walmart Foundation. In addition to data on studies funded by the Heart Association, the Data Vault also contains study-level data on projects participating with the IMPACT-FIM (Individual-Participant Meta-analysis for Prevention and Cardiometabolic Treatment through Food is Medicine) consortium. This data is derived from publically available journal articles and the participating investigators.
