A Queer Feminist Posthuman Approach to Ectogenesis

This chapter considers the potential impact of ectogenesis technologies on gender equality in reproduction. We argue that pregnancy-related inequalities are rooted in social, cultural, and economic factors, not just biological ones. Even if ectogenesis could bypass human gestation, it would not address these deeper societal issues. While ectogenesis may offer some benefits, it could also worsen unresolved ethical concerns, including divides in access and the racialized market for gametes. With sexism, racism, cis- and heteronormativity, and ableism in the sciences, medicine, law, and business, ectogenesis is likely to be developed, managed, and accessed by a predominantly white, affluent male group who stands to profit from such arrangements. Women already socially underprivileged due to race, class, sexual orientation, or nationality are unlikely to equally exercise a formal right to choose ectogenesis, but may be compelled to use such technologies if institutions deem them unfit to begin or continue a pregnancy. This binary understanding of gender must also be addressed to confront ethical issues arising from cis- and heteronormativity in reproductive technologies. We suggest a queer feminist posthuman framework and a reproductive justice orientation to develop the ethics of ectogenesis.
