Analysis of the Socio-economic Aspects in the Lives of Musahar

This article makes an exploration of the social stratification of the Musahar ethnic groups living in Biratnagar Municipality, Nepal. The objective of the study is to analyze where Musahars dwell, what their main occupations are and what is their life style. It also aims to study how these ethnic groups contribute in the mainstream society. The research methodology used for the research is the application of the functional perspective of sociology theorized by Emile Durkheim and Herbert Spencer. The research question raised for it was what forced the Musahars of Biratnagar in particular, and Nepal in general, to adopt the occupation of cleaning and sweeping the houses as slaves, and doing other kinds of labour works associated with construction and farming. Musahars are the untouchable and indigenous people of eastern terrain belt of Nepal. The research finding is that the Musahars of Biratnagar Municipality are regarded as low aboriginal people who are categorized as untouchable ethnic group because of the practice of social stratification based on inequalities. The research is expected to stand as a reference to the scholars interested in researching in similar aboriginal castes of Nepal.
