Mastering the Moment: How Target Distance, Target Speed and Additional Load Shapes Affordances for Interceptive Actions in Footballing Scenarios

To perform well, athletes must perceive both individual and social affordances within sporting environments. Interceptive action is often crucial to sporting success, yet research investigating interceptive affordance perception in open-play competitive sporting environments is extremely limited. This novel research investigates how dynamic factors such as target distance, target speed, and additional load influence affordance perception for interceptive actions against opponents. Across three pre-registered studies, university level footballers (n = 26) made action-based judgments on whether they could successfully intercept a target moving perpendicularly towards the space between themselves and an opponent. The position of the target systematically varied in its proximity to the participant versus the opponent. Participants consistently overestimated their interceptive ability, persisting with manipulations to target speed, and additional load applied to players and opponents. However, exploratory mixed-effects modelling revealed that participants successfully updated their interceptive affordances with increases to relative target distance, and additional load. Participants were less sensitive to increases in target speed. These findings have wide ranging implications across many sporting and non-sporting contexts, providing new insights to understanding affordance perception in competitive sporting situations and other fast-paced environments. Additionally, this work has practical applications to coaching, highlighting opportunities to enhance interceptive decision-making during matches.
