Understanding the Pasmanda Movement: A Study of Caste among the Muslim Community in India

The study explores the Pasmanda Movement as a crucial lens for understanding caste dynamics within the Indian Muslim community. Although Islamic teachings promote equality, caste hierarchies continue to influence social status, economic opportunities, and political representation. This research examines how these hierarchies shape relationships within the community and contribute to the marginalisation of Pasmanda Muslims, including backwards and Dalit Muslim groups, who frequently encounter exclusion from mainstream Muslim socio-political structures. Using qualitative analysis of historical documents, scholarly works, and contemporary reports, the study investigates the rise of Pasmanda identity as both a response to entrenched social stratification and a platform for collective action. It examines the strategies the movement employs, such as grassroots activism, advocacy for affirmative action, and political engagement, to confront systemic inequalities within the community. The research emphasises the intersection of caste and socio-economic disadvantage, highlighting the layered nature of marginalisation among Indian Muslims. The study also assesses how intra-community resistance and socio-political barriers influence the movement’s development, demonstrating that efforts to achieve equality remain contested and complex. By situating the movement within broader debates on caste, social justice, and minority politics, the research provides insights into how marginalised groups negotiate identity, claim rights, and seek representation. The findings underscore the importance of recognising caste as a significant factor within Muslim communities and offer a framework for understanding social mobilisation and policy intervention in contexts shaped by multiple inequalities.
