The scoping review seeks to fill this gap by systematically charting the available literature on cannabis use as a potential initiating factor for alcohol and tobacco use. Specifically, we aim to (1) describe the extent and nature of existing research on the temporal ordering of cannabis relative to alcohol and tobacco initiation; (2) examine potential mechanisms, i.e., biological, psychosocial, and contextual, that may explain these associations, and (3) identify demographic differences in cannabis initiation patterns in relation to tobacco and alcohol use.
