Working Towards Effective Allyship in Applied Sports Science: Autoethnographic Accounts From a U.K. Higher Education Institution

Inequalities exist for students studying courses aligned with applied sport sciences in U.K. higher education institutions (HEI) with disparities in graduate outcomes and learning experiences evident at an institutional, course, and individual level. The introduction of charter marks and equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) initiatives intended to level the playing field have done little to disrupt the status quo. Through autoethnography the present study reflects on the experiences of two individuals working in sport and health sciences. This paper provides an account of lived experiences and lessons learnt over a twenty-four month period working at an institutional and national level on a range of EDI projects. This paper concludes by proposing that collaborating as an accomplice and a redistribution of power sit at the root of change when working in social justice.
