Emurena ritae Tavares sp. nov. (Figs. 4–7) Type locality. Brazil, Paraíba, João Pessoa, UFPB — Campus I, Mata do Biotério (7°08’ 18”S 34°50’ 36”W). Type material. The species is named after Rita Maria Vasconcelos, the great aunt of the first author, to whom he dedicates his love. Diagnosis. Emurena ritae sp. nov. is externally similar to E. fernandezi (Fig. 3A), but the two species can be separated by the morphology of the male genitalia, which differ substantially. In E. ritae sp. nov., the valvae are distinctly longer and narrower in ventral view, whereas in E. fernandezi they are shorter and broader (Fig. 3B, Fig. 8A–E). The digitiform processes arising from the valvae are also noticeably narrower and more elongate in E. ritae sp. nov. The apex of the right valva in ventral view is rounded in E. fernandezi, but straight and truncate in E. ritae sp. nov., lacking any apical point. Externally, E. ritae sp. nov. also resembles E. lurida, but males of the latter species lack androconial patches on the wings, and the genitalia of E. lurida (Fig. 8G–J) are markedly divergent from the E. fernandezi species complex, to which E. ritae sp. nov. clearly belongs. Description. Male (Fig. 4A, B). Head (Fig. 5A): Antennae black, serrate, with very fine paired brown setae. Apex white, last segment yellowish. Antennal base white; vertex bright yellow. Frons blue-green, iridescent. Labial palpi well developed, basal segment yellow (same as thorax), longer than others; second segment widened distally, white and gray with bluish-green scales dorsally, apical segment minute, following the same coloration of second segment. Proboscis present, well developed, light brown. Thorax: Patagium rounded, mostly yellow, white near head; tegula subtriangular, yellow on the outer margin, greenish on the inner margin with white line separating both color tones. Dorsally, thorax with a central greenish oval patch, surrounding area yellow; foreleg with yellow coxa, femur yellow basally, becoming white ventrally and darkened dorsally toward tibia; tibia white laterally with two dark transverse bands and a thin dorsal stripe; tarsi gray with a posterior dark spot at each segment junction; midleg similar to foreleg, but femur and tibia longer, tibia with one pair of apical spurs; hindleg entirely yellow with two pairs of apical spurs on the tibia (Fig. 5B). Wings: Forewing 13–15 mm in length (n=3). Dorsal aspect yellow with three large greenish-gray iridescent patches. Median and apical patches may be fused (as in holotype, Fig. 4A) or separated by a yellow band (as in one of the female paratypes, Fig. 4C). Apical patch semicircular, starting at costal margin and not reaching opposite margin. Median patch larger than the others, nearly touching wing margin and tornus. Basal patch subtriangular with notch near tornus. Outer edge of patches with a thin white outline, wider in the apical patch; costal edge with a dark outline. Ventral pattern resembling dorsal, with paler more diffuse patches and overall coloration. A band of androconial scales is visible between veins A and CuA2 (Fig. 5C); Hindwing 6–7 mm in length (n=3). General shape subquadrangular, resembling a diamond. Frenulum present, long, 1 seta. Retinaculum near Sc vein. Hindwing costal area strongly expanded. Hindwing entirely yellow, with patch of androconial scales visible dorsally near the discal cell (Fig. 5D). Abdomen: Yellow dorsally and ventrally. First abdominal segment with longer hairs than others. Genitalia (Fig. 6 A–E): Male genitalia bilaterally asymmetrical in dorsal view, curved to left along anteroposterior axis. Uncus with two basal projections, left projection smaller, curved, reaching approximately half the length of main uncus shaft. Right projection larger, less curved, almost reaching apex of uncus. Central projection of uncus tapering apically; apex abruptly bent ventrally, not sharply pointed, fine setae present at apex. Vinculum on right side in dorsal view with distinct, modified, pointed projection; tip long, almost reaching right uncus projection, basal half with indentation, giving curved appearance; slightly curved toward inner margin, serrated near apex on outer margin. Valvae asymmetrical; in ventral view, left valva at least 1.5 times longer than right valva, 3.5 times longer than wide at base, with two indentations on inner margin near posterior half, basal indentation larger; long thin digitiform projection on outer margin. Right valva shorter, twice as long as wide, indentation on inner margin smaller than on left valva, digitiform projection shorter than on left valva; apical margin straight. Aedeagus as long as genital capsule, slightly curved dorsally. Vesica with weak scobinations. Female (Fig. 4C–E): As male, except: Wings: Forewing 15–17mm (n=3) in length, androconial patch on both sides absent. Hindwing 7–8mm (n=3) in length, shape much less quadrangular than male, not resembling a diamond. Frenulum with 3 setae, much shorter than in male. Abdomen: Abdomen wider in the posterior part than in male. Genitalia (Fig. 7A–C): Distinctly shaped process projecting from the base of papilla analis, slender, sinuous, elongate, curved at multiple points, apex slightly expanded. Papilla analis with fine setae. Apophyses short and thin, anterior apophysis slightly longer than posterior. Ostium curved to the left. Corpus bursae membranous, conspicuous and distinguishable appendix bursae present. Signum minute, slightly sclerotized, circular in shape. Distribution. The species is currently known only from its type locality and from Reserva Biológica Guaribas, a well-preserved remnant of Atlantic Forest located approximately 60 km north in a straight line. It is likely that the species also occurs in other forest fragments within the northern Atlantic Forest, north of the São Francisco River. However, additional moth-focused surveys are needed to test this hypothesis and better understand its distribution.
