Abokissa [also spelled Bokissa] Island, 15°37'S, 167°14'E; 140–153 m. Etymology: From the Latin adjective procellosus, -a, -um, derived from the noun procella, -ae, meaning “storm” The species epithet is declined as a masculine to agree with the gender of the genus. It aptly refers to the deep wavy basal sculpture unique among congeners. Description (in parentheses—data of the holotype): Medium sized shell for the genus, dextral, thin, conical, wider than tall (width 50.8 mm; height 27.4 mm), whorls concave, last whorl convex, very shallow suturae. Teleoconch of 5.½ whorls. Protoconch smooth, white, multispiral, of around 2.5 whorls (width 1.1 mm). Peripheral flange wide and thin, internally smooth. Shell sculpture composed of numerous granulose opisthocline spiral cords. Convex base, open umbilicus bordered by a subangulation. Basal sculpture composed by strong collabral ribs, becoming granulose near flange. Aperture simple, basal lip sinuous. Dorsum color brown with white flange, base white. Diagnostic cox1 sites: ‘G’ in the site 112, ‘A’ in the site 220, ‘G’ in the site 538. Distribution and bathymetric range: Known only from Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea, at depths between 100 and 170 meters (Fig. 4C). Remarks: Onustus procellosus sp. nov. is distinguished from other Indo-Pacific members of the genus by its strongly sculptured base with collabral lamellae, in contrast to the almost or fully smooth base of Onustus exutus and Onustus indicus; and by its typically bicolored dorsum, featuring a brown spire and a white peripheral flange. O. exutus possesses a peripheral flange bearing wavy digitations, a feature absent in the new species.
