Virtual urgent care in rural emergency departments: A rapid review

1. Rationale and Review Aims Models of virtual care have become an increasingly important resource for delivering care to patients with non-critical presentations in rural emergency departments. While previous research highlights the potential of these models to expand access to high-quality care, there remains a need for further investigation into their outcomes (du Toit et al., 2019; Tsou et al., 2021). The most recent systematic reviews include studies published up to mid-2020, leaving a gap in the synthesis of more contemporary evidence, particularly studies conducted during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This period saw a substantial expansion in telehealth, resulting in sustained changes to care delivery. Understanding the impact of these models is critical for informing rural health services and practice. This systematic review aims to: • Identify and describe models of virtual urgent care used in rural emergency departments • Evaluate the outcomes of these models for patients, staff and health services
