Parent experiences of holistic early intervention for children with motor learning impairments: A reflexive thematic analysis of Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity case studies

Early intervention services are widely recommended to support children with motor learning impairments. These services are recommended to be family-centred, and support the parent alongside the child, rather than child at the expense of the parent. In absence of any qualitative reports of holistic early intervention programs within the UK healthcare system, we present our thematic analysis of case studies from Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity (DVLCC). We generated four themes of parent experiences: 1.) coming to the DVLCC in distress; 2.) holistic approach to support at DVLCC; 3.) improved child wellbeing; and 4.) improved parent wellbeing. Together, these themes present DVLCC support as a transformational experience for children and their families, supporting them with holistic, relational, family-orientated early intervention services where public health systems lack the resources. Future research is needed to qualitatively and quantitative support these findings, and to economically rationalise early intervention services in the UK.
