Deep broadband cryogenic nulling is a prerequisite for the LIFE space mission to characterize habitable-zone exoplanets. While the top-level requirements on Optical Path Difference (OPD) and intensity mismatch are theoretically defined, achieving them across the 4 to 18.5µm bandpass under cryogenic conditions remains an unresolved engineering challenge. Even sub-arcsecond errors in alignment or coating mismatches at the sub-percent level may be critical at the required nulls. To prepare for the Nulling Interferometry Cryogenic Experiment (NICE), we present potential frameworks for the control and compensation of quasi-static chromatic, polarization, and alignment errors. Our reference strategy involves a careful static alignment and pre-compensation for cooling down, and to use targeted individual mechanisms. An alternative approach is the adaptive nuller. We compare the two and evaluate their suitability for a high-sensitivity, deep-contrast cryogenic nulling interferometer.
