High frequency observations rely critically on the stability and accuracy of a radiotelescope pointing mechanism. To establish operational autonomy and achieve higher technical performance, we initiated the independent development of a new servo system for the 32m Grueff Antenna. Our study prioritized an empirical characterization of the telescope’s dynamics. We developed a custom drive interface allowing for high-fidelity in-situ testing. Experimental data acquired through this process highlighted critical design requirements for the system upgrade. Results demonstrate that a robust active anti-backlash torque sharing strategy is paramount to mitigate mechanical play. Furthermore, the analysis confirmed that optimal tracking precision requires strict load-to-motor inertia matching and the adoption of ultra-low cogging motors to minimize velocity ripples. Finally, the observed non-linear behaviors dictate the implementation of adaptive control architectures, such as gain scheduling.
