Varicella in a patient with type 1 diabetes mellitus

Chichenpox is an acute viral disease that predominantly occurs in children, but may also affect adults. Severe forms of the disease are in patients with malignant tumors, acute infections such as HIV infection, rheumatoid arthritis, and prolonged stress. Severe cases can be complicated by encephalitis and multiple organ failure. This article presents a clinical analysis of a fatal outcome of generalized varicella in an adult patient with type 1 diabetes mellitus. The disease was characterized by predominant visceral manifestations and delayed appearance of skin lesions in the form of papulovesicular rash. This case demonstrates the diagnostic challenges, atypical clinical presentation, and rapid progression of varicella in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. The article briefly reviews the issues of the etiology and epidemiology of varicella and summarizes its clinical signs. The analysis of this rare case was based on medical history and the results of laboratory, instrumental, and morphological studies. Keywords: varicella, type 1 diabetes
