Advancing Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Research for Planetary Health in Nepal

Planetary health has emerged as an essential framework for understanding the complex relationships between environmental change and human wellbeing. Accelerating climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and ecosystem degradation are increasingly threatening population health, particularly in low-income and climate-vulnerable countries such as Nepal. Despite contributing minimally to global environmental degradation, Nepal faces disproportionate impacts through declining food security, deteriorating air quality, water resource depletion, ecosystem disruption, and increased risks of climate-sensitive and zoonotic diseases. These interconnected challenges cannot be adequately addressed through conventional discipline-specific research approaches. This editorial highlights the need for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research that integrates environmental sciences, public health, social sciences, economics, engineering, policy, and Indigenous knowledge systems to generate context-specific and equitable solutions. Collaborative research involving scientists, policymakers, communities, and civil society is essential for addressing the social and ecological determinants of health and strengthening resilience. Adopting a planetary health research paradigm offers Nepal an opportunity to advance sustainable development, promote environmental justice, and protect both human health and the natural systems upon which society depends.
