Environmental pollution from basalt mining in Ngoundiane, Senegal: A scoping review protocol of air quality, water quality, soil quality, and radioactivity monitoring using low-cost technologies

Objective: Pollution caused by basal mining is huge public health issue in Senegal contributing to the share bruden of diseases and mortality. This scoping review aims to compile evidence on the pollution caused by basalt mining in Ngoundiane and evaluate its environmental and health impacts. Introduction: Quarrying in Ngoundiane, Senegal, exposes residents to high levels of dust, contaminates farmland with heavy metals, and threatens biodiversity, forcing some to migrate as arable land disappears. Health crisis is reported in the community, with tuberculosis in the elderly, respiratory diseases in children, and water pollution compounding the risks. This scoping review aims to gather existing evidence, identify research gaps, and provide a basis for future action to protect local communities. Inclusion criteria: The review focuses on studies conducted between 2015 and 2025 in English or French, centered on Ngoundiane, Senegal or nearby areas. It includes observational, epidemiological, environmental monitoring studies, reports, theses, and grey literature. Eligible works examine air pollutants, their sources, or related health outcomes in humans or environment such as air quality. The review excludes studies conducted outside Ngoundiane without relevant local data, as well as those not addressing air pollution or health impacts. Editorials and opinion pieces without empirical evidence are also not considered. Methods: The review will be guided by Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Reviewer’s manual for scoping reviews. A literature search will be performed using this databases (BMJ open,PLOS one, Cochrane database, Citation searchings(Google scholar, Scopus, Web of Sciences,...), CINAHL, Embase,NIH (Pubmed, Medline, MESH,...), ProQuest omni (Western library), Global Health (CABI), AJOL, Sabinet. We are going to use air pollution, quarrying related keywords and text words related to health impacts, air quality monitoring and environmental impacts.
