Enabling Cloud Robotics in Coverage-Denied Environments: 5G Network-in-a-Box Use Case for SAR Operations With Quadruped Robots
Le résumé fourni par la source
The Cloud Robotics paradigm is being increasingly implemented in industrial environments and emergency scenarios for reconnaissance and Search And Rescue (SAR) missions, primarily through 5G connectivity. However, the diversity of these scenarios affects the quality of communications. Nevertheless, little literature analyzes the impact of communications in these types of scenarios for cloud robotics. Therefore, this study aims to address this gap by analyzing the impact of providing 5G connectivity in coverage-denied environments, such as tunnels, through a network-in-a-box solution in the Cloud Robotics paradigm. This enables the use of a quadrupedal robot in a tunnel within a cloud robotics framework and offloads computationally intensive applications to the edge and cloud. The metrics obtained in a real tunnel scenario within the context of the Workshop on Emergencies called JEMERG25 in Málaga, as well as in a similar scenario, are analyzed in the article. The feasibility of these solutions in emergency scenarios is demonstrated, albeit with some precautions. Additionally, it compares the performance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications, such as processing speed and response accuracy, in different locations (edge and cloud). Finally, the results are discussed, and a Cloud Robotics framework with dynamic orchestration that considers the lessons learned is proposed.
