Next-gen Wound Healing: Innovative Technologies Transforming Care

Introduction: A wound is an injury that disrupts or destroys cells, leading to alterations in their structure and function. The healing process occurs through distinct stages, including coagulation, granulation, and tissue remodeling. Wounds, whether from internal or external causes, often provoke immune responses such as inflammation and necrosis. A comprehensive review of the latest wound dressing techniques was conducted, focusing on traditional and advanced wound dressings, including foams, hydrogels, topical herbal applications, enzyme-based treatments, ointments, gauze, films, nanofibers, and composite materials that mimic tissue regeneration processes. Furthermore, patented plant-based wound dressing compositions reported by various inventors were evaluated. This review aims to explore novel strategies for treating and managing common medical conditions such as burn injuries, chronic wounds, cutaneous injuries, and sepsis. These strategies integrate traditional remedies with modern technologies to enhance wound healing outcomes while minimizing side effects. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and patent databases up to 2024. The selection focused on peer-reviewed articles, systematic reviews, and patents addressing wound healing technologies, dressings, herbal therapies, and clinical applications. The reviewed studies were evaluated for methodology, outcomes, and novelty. Results: Innovations in wound care, such as natural biomaterials, nanotechnology, peptide-based therapies, and protease treatments, demonstrate significant potential in improving wound healing. The integration of bioactive materials into wound dressings facilitates better tissue regeneration and immune modulation, promoting faster recovery. Discussion: The findings suggest that while conventional wound dressings provide basic protection, modern innovations offer multifunctionality and accelerated healing. The integration of herbs into advanced delivery platforms enhances therapeutic potential. However, challenges remain in standardization, regulatory approval, and large-scale clinical validation. Conclusion: Combining traditional knowledge with modern technological advancements can lead to the development of more effective and safer therapies for wound healing. Emerging approaches utilizing natural biomaterials, nanotechnology, and bioengineered dressings present promising avenues for enhancing wound care practices.
