Key messages• The food system framework of the food system observatory encompasses all activities related to food supply chains, food environments, and food demand, as well as the use of natural resources, consumption and diets, and waste, by-products and recycling.Food system outcomes represent the environmental, economic, social, and health impacts in creating food security and resilience.The governance structures and policy responses that address the European food system, including market power and measures focused on adaptation, innovation, research, and transformation, represent a key feedback mechanism in food systems.• Climate change emerged as the strongest point of consensus and a clear overarching driver for the European food system.Geopolitical conflict and instability have emerged as a second significant concern for the future of European food systems.Perspectives on the impact of technology on future food systems differ across Europe and include strong interest in increasing modification of food and advancement of food technologies.• The design directions of the FutureFoodS food system observatory (FSO) address structural gaps in existing food system monitoring frameworks in Europe: fragmentation, focusing on tracking individual indicators of environmental performance, agricultural productivity, or dietary health in isolation, without capturing the systemic dynamics that drive or obstruct transition.Co-funded by the European Union.Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or European
