Influence of differential nitrogen application on biochemical, physiological parameters and tuber yield in two potato cultivars

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a globally significant food crop, valued for its high energy content and essential nutrients. This study investigates the effects of nitrogen fertilization on vegetative growth and biochemical composition in potato plants. Key vegetative traits assessed include plant height, shoot number, shoot biomass, and nitrogen content, while biochemical parameters include protein, starch, reducing sugars, total sugars, specific gravity, dry matter, and vitamin C. Results showed that nitrogen fertilization significantly enhanced vegetative growth, increasing plant height, shoot number, and biomass, along with higher nitrogen content in plant tissues. Biochemically, nitrogen application led to increased protein content, reducing sugars, and total sugars. However, excessive nitrogen negatively affected tuber quality, decreasing starch content, dry matter, specific gravity, and vitamin C levels. These findings suggest that while nitrogen supports vigorous growth and enhances some nutritional components, over-application can compromise tuber quality. Therefore, balanced nitrogen management is essential for maximizing both yield and nutritional value in potato production. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS, while graphical data representation was carried out using Python and Minitab 18 (Minitab Inc., State College, PA, USA). This study underscores the importance of optimizing nitrogen input to achieve sustainable and high-quality potato cultivation.
