Unlocking the Future of Data-Driven Collaboration - Shaping the Horizon of Open Science and Industry Innovation

This report reflects on the final MatCHMaker workshop held on 29 May 2026 in Paris, jointly organised with the European Materials Modelling Council (EMMC). The MatCHMaker project brought together twelve partners across eight countries to advance data-driven materials innovation through integrated characterisation, machine learning, physics‑based modelling, and semantic interoperability. The workshop highlighted key industrial outcomes, including accelerated microstructural analysis workflows for cement, solid oxide fuel cells, and PEM fuel cells, and the development of the MatchMaker Open Repository (MOR) - a domain‑agnostic, ontology‑based environment enabling FAIR data practices and AI‑assisted exploration. Discussions emphasised non‑technical barriers to data management, the need for dedicated data stewardship, and community-driven pathways for sustainable software adoption. Overall, MatCHMaker demonstrated how semantic frameworks, automated workflows, and cross-sector collaboration can reduce development time, cost, and risk in advanced materials design.
