Cyber Dating Abuse: Exploring Perceptions and Creating Awareness among Young Adults Aged 20–24 Years

Cyber dating abuse has emerged as a growing concern in the context of increasing digitalization of romantic relationships among young adults. The present study aimed to explore perceptions of cyber dating abuse among young adults aged 20–24 years in Mumbai, with specific focus on understanding awareness regarding its meaning, forms, challenges, and prevention strategies. A sample of 400 young adults (200 males and 200 females) was selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire developed by the researchers to assess perceptions related to cyber dating abuse. Descriptive statistical analysis, including frequencies and percentages, was employed for data interpretation. Findings revealed that participants demonstrated moderate awareness of cyber dating abuse, with greater recognition of overt forms such as threatening messages and password demands compared to subtle manifestations such as emotional manipulation and technological control. Key challenges identified in addressing cyber dating abuse included embarrassment or shame, fear of retaliation, and limited knowledge regarding reporting channels. Prevention strategies perceived as effective included setting clear online boundaries, promoting education on healthy digital relationships, and limiting personal information shared online. The findings underscore the urgent need for awareness initiatives, digital literacy interventions, and preventive educational programs to enhance recognition of unhealthy online relationship behaviors and foster safer digital interactions among young adults.
