Towards biodiversity credits without standardizing nature

The concept of biodiversity credits is attracting considerable attention as a mechanism for mobilizing private sector finance to advance global biodiversity goals. However, there are serious concerns around the suggested standardization of biodiversity into universal units and the risk of commodifying nature. Instead of creating a market for standardized biodiversity units, we argue for a model with an exchange platform in which funders are accredited in direct proportion to their financial contributions. Combined with a multi-dimensional project evaluation system, such a model would avoid pitfalls of standardizing nature while maintaining all major benefits of biodiversity credit schemes.
