When and how flowering plants emerged and evolved to shape modern species supplying our food, energy, oxygen, and materials? From 84 Angiosperms species, inferred ancestral genomes unveiled the changes in genome structure, genes sequences and functions at the basis of the Angiosperms including major botanical families. Such evolutionary framework allowed to identify biological functions driving major life history traits gained during Angiosperm evolution, transfer key trait-related genes from model species to crops and show the conservation of major biological processes across Angiosperms. Overall, the present reconstruction of flowering plant paleohistory provides insights on how deep understanding of species evolution deliver “phenologs”, gene driving the same phenotype-trait-processus between species. Such provided evolutionary framework opens novel avenues for modern plant breeding in the context of ongoing climate change and agroecological transition.
