(Wissens-)Ordnung und Experimente: Reallabore als Schnittstelle und Explorationsraum in hybriden Arenen der Wissensproduktion

This dissertation examines ‘Reallabore’ (also known as Living Labs) as hybrid knowledge infrastructures in which both epistemic and social ordering processes take place simultaneously. Building on the diagnosis within the knowledge society of an increasingly distributed knowledge order, Living Labs are analyzed as exposed sites where science and society negotiate new forms of collaboration. The thesis addresses two central research questions: (1) How can the (infra)structural processes of change in the production of knowledge and social order be made analyzable, and what social contracts between science and society emerge from them? (2) What influence does the local context have on experimental design and knowledge production in Living Labs? Methodologically, the thesis relies on qualitative case studies: For the structural analysis, four Living Labs with different leading institutions (university, city, industry, civil society) were examined. For the contextual analysis, two mobility Living Labs in Berlin and two in Munich were compared with one another. The data set consists of guided interviews, project documents, and participant observation. The results show: (1) Two different social contracts ‘science in and for society’ and ‘science with and by society’ emerge depending on the leading institution and structural design. (2) Regional innovation cultures, sectoral structures, and political administrative logics are important theoretical dimensions and influence the experimental design. This dissertation contributes to the development of analytical frameworks for structure, experimentation, and context in Living Labs.
