Effects of dietary supplementation with Clostridium butyricum and compound probiotics on growth performance, intestinal morphology, cecal microbiota, and fecal microbiota of broiler chickens

The experiment aimed to investigate the effects of adding Clostridium butyricum and compound probiotics to feed on the growth performance, intestinal morphology, cecal microbiota, and fecal microbiota of broiler chickens. A total of 3 000 healthy 35-day-old Sanhuang chickens (half male and half female) with similar body conditions were randomly divided into three groups, with five replicates per group and 200 chickens per replicate. The control group (LC group) was fed the basal diet, the Clostridium butyricum group (LA group) was fed the basal diet supplemented with 500 g/t Clostridium butyricum, and the compound probiotics group (LB group) was fed the basal diet supplemented with 1 000 g/t compound bacteria. The test period was 45 days. The results showed that from 35 to 49 days of age, the average daily gain of the LB group was higher than that of the LA and LC groups, and the feed to gain ratio was lower than that of the LA and LC groups (P>0.05). From 50 to 80 days of age, the average daily gain of the LA group was higher than that of the LB and LC groups, and the feed to gain ratio was lower than that of the LB and LC groups (P>0.05). The body weight of the LA and LB groups at 80 days of age was higher than that of the LC group (P>0.05). At 49 days and 80 days of age, the villus height of the duodenum and jejunum in the LA group, as well as the villus height and villus entrophy ratio of the ileum in the LB group, were all higher than those in the LC group. At 49 days of age, compared with the group LC, the Shannon index of cecum in the LA and LB groups of broiler chickens was increased, while the Simpson index was decreased. Correlation analysis found that at the phylum level, the abundance of Proteobacteria in feces and cecum was positively correlated (R=0.97), while the relative abundance of Firmicutes in feces and cecum was negatively correlated (R=-0.54). At the genus level, the relative abundance of Ruminococcus 2 in feces and cecum was positively correlated (R=0.36), while the relative abundance of Lactobacillus in feces and cecum was negatively correlated (R=-0.16). The study indicates that adding Clostridium butyricum and compound probiotics to feed can improve the growth performance and intestinal microbiota diversity of broiler chickens, but the effect is not significant.
