Remote sensing applications for biodiversity monitoring: Scales, transparency and drones – Outcomes from the BioMonWeek 2026 workshop on remote sensing applications
Le résumé fourni par la source
This report summarises the outcomes of the BioMonWeek 2026 workshop “Remote sensing applications for biodiversity monitoring”, held on 7 May 2026 in Montpellier, France. It explores how remote sensing and predictive modelling can support biodiversity monitoring that is scalable, transparent and useful for policy. The report highlights the need for robust model validation, clear communication of uncertainty, attention to scale, and stronger links between field observations, drone data and satellite-based monitoring. It also identifies key challenges, including scale mismatches, limited standards for drone data collection, risks of overfitting, and the need to clarify which model outputs are fit for which policy or monitoring uses. The report is relevant for researchers, monitoring agencies, remote sensing specialists, data managers, public authorities and policy makers involved in biodiversity monitoring and the use of Earth observation data.
