Notable Trends in Informatics Bachelor Students' Retention and Graduation Rates across Europe

The paper presents selected recent trends in bachelor-level informatics education across Europe, with a focus on student retention and graduation rates. This analysis is based on a dataset obtained from the Informatics Europe Higher Education (IEHE) Data Portal, maintained by Informatics Europe, which aggregates harmonized statistical and descriptive data from 25 European countries, enabling cross-country and longitudinal comparisons. The analysis shows a general improvement in retention over a period of 10 years, with rates between 75% and 100%, while graduation rates vary more widely, from 30% to 90%. Gender differences are small and inconsistent, and results differ more noticeably among types of institutions, such as research universities and universities of applied sciences. Overall, the findings highlight gradual improvement in student persistence and completion rates across Europe while also revealing strong national differences and the need for better harmonization of Informatics-related statistical definitions. The paper concludes that further research is needed to explain country-specific trends and to improve comparability of higher education data across Europe.
