The critical role of trained operators in sprayed concrete application

Sprayed concrete, or shotcrete, is a cornerstone of underground construction, serving both temporary and permanent support functions. While material quality and equipment are critical, the competence of the operator ultimately determines performance. Trained and certified nozzle operators are essential to delivering thickness, uniformity, and durability of sprayed concrete linings, with direct implications for safety, efficiency, and sustainability of the tunnelling process. Recent advances in monitoring technologies and training methodologies have shown that ongoing operator development and real-time feedback can be effectively utilised for sustainable and safe tunnel construction. Without proper training and continuous monitoring, rebound and wastage can exceed 50%, undermining both efficiency and sustainability.
