Mapping Working Memory Paradigms for Cognitive Research in Chronic Pain: A Scoping Review.

This research project will be a scoping review of the current methodologies used in working memory research of pain, whether these are lab-based or clinical studies. The primary purpose of this review is to systematically map and evaluate existing working memory paradigms in order to inform the selection of an appropriate task to be used in an electroencephalography (EEG) study involving individuals with chronic pain. The aim is to identify a working memory task which isolates encoding, maintenance, and retrieval stages, enabling a more precise investigation of the underlying cognitive mechanisms. This is particularly important for investigating working memory within a predictive coding framework, which conceptualises cognition as the dynamic interaction between sensory input (bottom-up) and expectations (top-down). Therefore, the selected paradigms must be sensitive to these distinct processes. Additionally, the review will evaluate whether different classes of working memory tasks preferentially engage top-down or bottom-up processes. Consideration will also be given to the suitability of tasks for use in a clinical population, such as cognitive load and attentional considerations. The expected outcome of this project is a theoretically informed and methodologically justified working memory paradigm for use in a later EEG study.
