A methodological framework for developing evidence-based clinical practice guidelines in oral health: The Global Observatory for Dental Care (GODeC) Initiative

Objective In this methodological paper, we describe the Global Observatory for Dental Care (GODeC) Initiative, created to improve access to trustworthy evidence in oral health and to support evidence-informed decision-making in dental care. Methods The initiative is grounded in the recognition that oral health matters globally and that all people, particularly those living in socioeconomically disadvantaged settings and facing a higher burden of oral diseases, should have free and easy access to the best available evidence. This paper provides an overview of the GODeC Initiative, including its rationale, organizational structure, and the methods used to identify priority topics, search and synthesize evidence, formulate recommendations, and plan dissemination and implementation strategies. Results The GODeC Initiative provides a structured framework to support the development, adaptation, appraisal, and dissemination of evidence-based clinical recommendations in oral health. Its application may contribute to improving access to trustworthy evidence, enhancing clinical decision-making, and strengthening health systems, especially in resource-constrained contexts. Conclusion The GODeC framework may strengthen evidence-informed decision-making in dental care by improving access to trustworthy evidence and supporting the implementation of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. Its application has the potential to enhance clinical decision-making and strengthen health systems. Clinical significance The relevance of the GODeC initiative lies in its potential to reduce unwarranted variations in clinical practice, facilitate the implementation of evidence-based interventions, support decision-making in resource-constrained settings, and improve the quality and consistency of oral healthcare delivery.
