It is the middle of the day. The harsh sun is glaring in the very north of Brazil. I clamber out of the car, eyes squinting, water bottle in hand. We have arrived in Pacaraima, a town that shares a land border with the southeast of Venezuela. Our proximity to the equator means that it is a warm and sticky 35 degrees Celsius. The aid workers I am travelling with pull on their bright vests, hats, and lanyards. We each generously spray on mosquito repellent, the scent lingering around us as we make our way out of the parking lot. We walk quietly past a barbed wire fence towards the processing centre. It takes a minute for my eyes to adjust from the brightness of the outside to the darkness of the large concrete undercover area. The team have driven over 200km from the capital city of Boa Vista to reach the border. They are here to gain a better sense of what is needed for the next phase of the humanitarian project. We are immediately greeted by another aid worker, who eagerly receives an update from our group. I take this moment to look around, gazing out over a sea of people donning coloured vests, each printed with a different agency logo. There's at least three that I recognize: the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR or ACNUR in Portuguese), the International Organization for Migration, and the International Committee of the Red Cross. My eyes dart across the space, trying to take it all in; plastic chairs and people waiting, distinct signage in both Portuguese and Spanish, and a mass of military personnel in khaki green camouflage.
