In transit We walk out of the triage centre and into the sunlight. It takes another moment for my eyes to adjust to the brightness of the afternoon. The heat feels overwhelming and as I walk, I wonder if there will be shade where we are going. An aid worker leads us to the BV- 8 transit centre, just a minute from the triage post. We arrive at the check- in point: a large undercover area with metal barricades dictating where to stand while we wait. Two army officers greet us from behind folding tables and ask the reason for our entry. It is at this point that I realize all the humanitarian workers are wearing their vests, except for me. I feel out of place, but no one seems concerned by my presence. A colourful kids’ activity space is set up on the other side of the undercover area, opposite the check- in tables, about five or ten metres away. Once we are given the OK, we venture into the transit centre to continue our tour. We begin by walking towards the first dormitory tent from the entrance. The small grey stones beneath our shoes crunch and shift unevenly with every step and I can feel warmth radiating through the soles of my shoes. People sit in small groups and on their own in the shadows created by the tents, likely seeking some minimal reprieve from the unforgiving temperature. Some people look up at our group, others continue as if we were not there. It is quiet, except for the speech of the aid worker who is our ‘tour guide’. We pop our heads into the tent designated for single men.
