Arduino-based automated I – V curve tracer for physics laboratory
Résumé fourni par la source
Abstract We present an automated current–voltage ( I – V ) curve tracer using the open-source Arduino platform, designed explicitly as structured, multi-stage student project for physics laboratory teaching. Retaining the classical circuit arrangement, the system digitizes voltage and current acquisition to generate accurate I – V curves. The DC variable voltage source is realized using the on-board digital-to-analogue converter, with an operational amplifier buffer to boost the output currents up to 250 mA. A digital temperature sensor extends the setup to explore temperature dependence of device characteristics. The curve tracer is validated against a high-end commercial I – V curve tracer and applied to resistors, silicon and germanium diodes, a light emitting diode, a Zener diode, and an incandescent bulb. Each phase of the project is mapped to explicit learning objectives, covering semiconductor device physics, analogue electronics, digital instrumentation, and experimental data analysis. A five-step guided measurement sequence is described, with commentary on the intended learning outcomes at each step, making the system suitable for both introductory and advanced undergraduate laboratory curricula.
