Interaction of Research Misconduct Severity and Gender Bias on Perceptions of Misconduct Scenarios

This study examined how people evaluate researchers who perform questionable research practices compared to those who report such practices. The goal was to determine whether perceptions of a researcher’s integrity, likeability, and the credibility of their findings vary based on the researcher’s role (wrongdoer versus reporter), the gender of the observer, and the severity of the misconduct. Understanding these perceptions may provide insight into whether wrongdoers are socially penalized, and whether individuals who help protect the integrity of research are supported or socially penalized for doing so.
