Practice-based learning in Indonesian Islamic higher education in the era of society 5.0

The dynamics of global and regional job markets that are proliferating along with the development of communication and information technology (IT) necessitates the presence of a state or private Islamic Higher Education that can prepare students with knowledge, competencies and skills that are relevant to the needs of the world of work. This research investigated the implementation of Practice-based Learning (PbL) in Islamic Higher Education. This research is qualitative research implementing a case study design. The analyses of the research findings were based on the themes derived from the research questions. Two main issues were discussed in the research: the learning experiences of the SED students in the university and their contribution to improving their knowledge and skills in the workplace and the instructors’ contribution and support to the students from which they improved their knowledge and skills. The results of the research informed the stakeholders about how to prepare students academically and practically for the PbL in the workplace. In particular, there is an urgent need for concrete and systemic management solutions to ensure the effectiveness of Practice-based Learning (PbL) in Islamic higher education. The systemic management solutions cover four aspects; an updated PbL model to ensure the alignment between academic preparation within the institution and the workplace demands; critical importance for establishing rigorous mentor selection and training mechanisms; criteria for clear program effectiveness to monitor and evaluate PbL outcomes; and the establishment of long-term partnerships with employers. All these strategies places PbL as a strategically managed program which is capable of producing graduates with skills, adaptive behavior and being responsive to labor market needs.
