Effect of Early Weaning and Supplementation on the Longissimus thoracis Muscle Proteome of Pasture-Raised Nellore Bulls

High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide The aim of this study was to compare the Longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle proteomes of Nellore bulls subjected to early weaning (EW; 120 days, n = 20) or conventional weaning (CW; 205 days, n = 20). From 120 to 205 days of age, EW calves received protein−energy supplementation (10 g/kg body weight/day), whereas CW calves remained with their dams and received mineral supplementation. After 205 days, all animals were raised together on pasture with protein−energy supplementation until slaughter (915 days). LT biopsies were collected at 205 and 915 days and analyzed by nanoLC-MS/MS. At 205 days, EW calves showed lower abundances of proteins related to β-oxidation and heat shock response, and higher abundance of proteins related to muscle growth, than CW calves. At slaughter, fewer differences were observed between treatments, and the enriched pathways were primarily associated with oxidative phosphorylation. Overall, EW with supplementation altered proteins related to lipid metabolism at 205 days; however, these differences were not maintained until slaughter.
