The durability of platinum-based cathodes in low-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (LT-PEMFCs) is significantly influenced by the properties of their carbon support. This study explores the use of hybrid carbon support combinations of high-surface-area carbon (HSAC), low-surface-area carbon (LSAC), and graphitized carbon (GrC) to enhance both initial performance and long-term stability. Through comprehensive physicochemical and electrochemical characterization, it is shown that HSAC promotes high Pt dispersion and activity, while GrC contributes to improved structural integrity under accelerated stress testing. Gravimetric mixtures of these supports maintain high electrochemical surface area (ECSA) and stable performance, even when incorporating lower-performing carbon types. These results demonstrate that hybrid carbon supports offer a promising strategy for optimizing PEMFC cathodes by balancing activity, stability, and material cost.
