Acute aerobic exercise and components of motor learning .

This project is a systematic review and meta-analysis examining how acute aerobic exercise influences temporal and spatial components of motor learning. Although acute aerobic exercise is known to modulate neuroplasticity and motor learning, it remains unclear whether spatial and temporal components of motor learning are affected to the same extent and how these effects depend on exercise timing and intensity. This review synthesizes experimental studies involving healthy adults who performed a single session of acute aerobic exercise compared with a non-exercise control condition. Motor learning outcomes assessed at retention are categorized as spatial or temporal measures. Quantitative meta-analytic methods are used to examine how these outcomes differ as a function of exercise timing relative to practice (before vs. after) and to evaluate whether exercise intensity (low, moderate, high) moderates these effects. It is hypothesized that acute aerobic exercise preferentially enhances spatial, rather than temporal components of motor learning, and that exercise performed before practice is associated with greater motor learning at retention than exercise performed after practice. Further, it is hypothesized that these effects are observed following moderate and high exercise intensities. This review aims to clarify the conditions under which acute aerobic exercise is most effective in supporting motor learning and to provide a structured synthesis of the existing evidence.
