This dataset supports the paper “The Cost of Belonging: Traditional Toi Celebrations, Reciprocal Gift Economies, and the Politics of Household Financial Strain in Kyrgyzstan” (author manuscript). Data collectionThe data come from a stratified random sample of 1,013 households in Kyrgyzstan, collected between [Month] and [Month] 2024. The survey was administered face‑to‑face using a structured questionnaire, translated into Kyrgyz and Russian. The sample is representative of the national population at the regional and urban/rural levels. Geographic and temporal coverage Country: Kyrgyzstan Regions: All seven provinces (Batken, Chuy, Jalal‑Abad, Naryn, Osh, Talas, Issyk‑Kul) plus the cities of Bishkek and Osh. Year of data collection: 2024 Key variablesThe dataset includes household demographics, income, celebration attendance, gift expenditures, hosting experiences, and attitudes toward regulation. Main variables are: attend_neg: Perceived negative impact of attending celebrations (binary) host_neg: Perceived negative impact of hosting (binary) host_pos: Net financial surplus from hosting (binary) support_ord, support_bin: Support for government regulation (ordered and binary) income_som, gift_som, freq_yr, burden: Income, gift amounts, attendance frequency, and burden share (gift/income) Demographic controls: age, female, urban, higher_ed, hhsize, social_hi File structureThe deposited archive (cost_of_belonging_kyrgyzstan_2024_v1.0.zip) contains: kyrgyzstan_toi_gift_economy_2024_datafile_v1.0.dta – Stata 15 dataset analyse_toi_data.do – Stata do‑file that reproduces all tables and figures in the paper TOI_Data_Dictionary_v1.0.pdf – Codebook with variable labels, value codes, and missing value definitions README.txt – Detailed information on file structure, replication instructions, and license Replication notes All analyses were performed using Stata version 15. To replicate, open Stata, set the working directory to the folder containing the files, and run analyse_toi_data.do. The do‑file loads the dataset, performs listwise deletion as described in the paper, and exports the main tables to RTF format.
