Influence of degree of conversion on the cytotoxicity of 3D‐printed denture base resins. A scoping review

PURPOSE: Evidence regarding the cytotoxicity of 3D-printed denture base resins and the role of degree of conversion remains limited and heterogeneous. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to map existing in vitro evidence and explore how degree of conversion and post-processing factors are reported in relation to biological outcomes. METHODS: This scoping review followed PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Searches were conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and LILACS, with gray literature identified through ProQuest. Studies evaluating the cytotoxicity of 3D-printed denture base resins were included. RESULTS: Twelve in vitro studies published between 2021 and 2025 were included. Most studies evaluated resins fabricated using digital light processing. Cytotoxicity was assessed using in vitro assays; however, degree of conversion was inconsistently evaluated and measured using different methods. Considerable methodological heterogeneity was observed across studies. Higher degrees of conversion were generally associated with lower cytotoxicity, and post-processing protocols were frequently related to variations in biological outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: 3D-printed denture base resins generally demonstrate acceptable cytocompatibility under specific experimental conditions. Higher degrees of conversion were frequently associated with lower cytotoxicity, and post-processing conditions appear to play a key role in both material properties and biological response, highlighting the need for further standardized in vitro investigations and well-designed in vivo and clinical studies.
